Discover the untold story of Italian food in Australia

Most people think Italian migrants brought pasta, espresso and all the other delights of the Italian kitchen to Australia in the 1950s, but that's just not true.

The real story is far more fascinating and far more complicated. It begins with the British colonisation of Australia and includes fashion, art and architecture. It crosses cultures, and factors in economics, politics, immigration and industrialisation.

Australia's love of Italian food has been shaped not just by migrants and mavericks, but by what we imagine Italy to be.

Without someone to guide you through this complex history, you’ll never know the true story of Italian food in this country... that's where I come in...

Meet your guide

Hi, I'm Dr Tania Cammarano. I'm a storyteller, journalist and proud daughter of Italian migrants. I'm also Australia's leading Italian food historian.

With a PhD in history focused on Italian food, as well as years of experience teaching gastronomy at William Angliss Institute and the University of Adelaide, I bring an academic's insight and a journalist’s flair to my walking tours.

I've been published and featured in The Age, SBS Food, and The Wall Street Journal, amongst others, and I've consulted for ABC TVs Further Back in Time for Dinner. I've presented my research at conferences in both Australia and Italy.

I'm passionate about helping Australians understand the real history of Italian food - the parts you definitely won’t find online (especially on ChatGPT)! Join me on a tour and discover it for yourself!

What people are saying

It’s funny how we walk through places all the time and don’t give much thought to their history. I must have walked these streets hundreds of times… but now I have greater context for Melbourne’s storied history thanks to this tour…Tania’s knowledge of Italian food history and migrant history is unsurpassed, and it shows her obvious passion for both.

— Nathan Clarke

One of the highlights was enjoying coffee, antipasto and wine at two different venues on iconic Lygon Street, as Tania further disentangles Italian food culture with you. She is the perfect person to consult if you are an Italian food fan and geek, with her background as an Italian food historian. She is also one of the loveliest people you will meet, and enjoy the tour with.”

— Tracey Cheung

I enjoyed every minute of this tour of Carlton. Tania's commentary was always wonderfully colourful so were her own experiences of the Italian traditions. The delicious antipasto & beautiful wine concluded a lovely Italian experience.”
